West Florida gets past Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – In their first home match of the 2014 season, the University of Montevallo women's soccer team was defeated by the University of West Florida, 5-0.

The first goal of the game for West Florida came off a corner kick. Sara Helgadottir was able to put it directly in the net from the corner to give the Argonauts a 1-0 lead.

This goal came at 35:15, and would be the lone goal scored in the first half.

In the first half, Montevallo hung tough with the perennial power, recording three shots to UWF's five.

At the beginning of the second half, the Argonauts came out firing. Just over a minute into the half, Daryl Bell was able to capitalize on a turnover and put the Falcons in a 2-0 hole.

The lead became 3-0 after April Syme was able to put a corner kick in the back of the net at 55:30. Helgadottir got her third point of the night on the goal, taking the corner and recording the assist.

Less than a minute later, Taylor Burkhart scored, making the lead 4-0 in West Florida's favor. The goal was assisted by Anique Walker.

The final tally of the evening went to Tricia Gould, who scored a goal from right in front of the net after receiving a ball from Brianna Young.

The Falcons are back in action this weekend, as they hit the road and travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Armstrong State Pirates.

That game will start at noon.
