Falcons fall on the road in season opener

CLINTON, Miss. - In the first game of the 2014 season for the University of Montevallo women's soccer team, they fell on the road to Mississippi College, 3-1.

The Falcons opened up the game with a bang, scoring at 2:11. Jade Pennock buried a goal against the Choctaws with the assist going to Michaela Graber. Pennock and Graber are the two leading returning scorers for Montevallo.

Mississippi College would respond, however, before the half was over. First, Sayit Mejia Bello scored at 17:46. Madison Leonard was credited with the assist on Bello's third goal of the season.

Less than three minutes before the first half came to an end, the Choctaws were able to take the lead on a Christian Robertson goal. Melanie Benner recorded the assist on the tally that gave Mississippi College the 2-1 lead after 45 minutes.

Benner would record her second assist of the day in the second half, aiding on Macey Lee's goal at 71:29.

The third goal for Mississippi College would be the final goal of the day, as the Choctaws defeated the Falcons (0-1) by the final score of 3-1.

In her first collegiate game, Montevallo goalkeeper Katie Pearson had eight saves.

Montevallo will return to action on Friday, September 12. It will be the Falcons' home opener, and they will take on the Chargers from UAH.

First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
