CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After suffering two hard losses on Friday to start their season, the Falcons' volleyball team responded with a tough five set loss against Lenoir-Rhyne and a convincing four set win against Limestone on Saturday.
In the first match Saturday, Montevallo fell in heartbreaking five set fashion to Lenoir-Rhyne. After winning the first set, the Falcons and Bears alternated victories through four sets, but Lenior-Rhyne was able to claim the decisive fifth set, 15-9.
For the Falcons, freshman Kristy Bohan led the way in kills, with 12. The Huntsville native had 30 attacks overall and hit .200 for the match.
Senior Katie Best and junior Rebekah Phelps each added 11 kills. Best did her damage on 28 attacks, hitting .286.
Phelps was named to the Queens Invitational All-Tournament team.
Junior setter Briana Marquez had 38 assists in the contest, easily pacing the squad. She also added 22 digs. Carissa Bell led the way with 27 digs. Sarah Guidry had 15 digs to go along with her five kills.
When the Falcons took the court against Limestone in their second match, they were able to avenge the loss earlier in the day and earn the four set victory: 21-25, 26-24, 25-18, and 25-17.
Best and Phelps were again key figures for the Falcons and, again, each had the same number of kills. The two returning starters each had 12 kills in the second match of the day, with Phelps leading the way in hitting percentage, hitting .308.
Sophomore Chandler Cooper added eight kills to the Montevallo attack and hit .240, while Bohan added seven kills and hit .250.
Marquez added to her impressive assist total, with 36 helpers. She also had 10 digs and two kills.
The four set victory was the first win of the year for the Falcons (1-3).
Montevallo returns to action this Tuesday, September 9, in their home opener. The Falcons will host a tri-match with West Florida and this same Limestone team.
That match will get underway at 3 p.m. with a rematch with Limestone.
