HOW IT HAPPENED

Concordia used a 20-1 run in the second half to run away with the victory over Montevallo in the Falcons' season opener.

Montevallo jumped out to an early 15-8 lead following a layup by senior Katie Colson with 5:34 remaining in the opening period. The Hornets ended the first period with a 14-5 run to take a 22-20 lead.

Concordia led by as many as eight points in the second period following a layup by Tavia Harris, which gave the Hornets a 28-20 lead. Montevallo trimmed the deficit to 34-32 at halftime following a basket by junior Jazmine Stubblefield with 14 seconds remaining in the half.

The Falcons opened the second half with a 13-8 run, capped with a layup by senior Katherine Goldsby, to take a 45-42 lead midway through the third period.

Concordia then went on a 20-1 run, with Harris providing eight consecutive points at one stretch, to open up a 62-46 lead. Montevallo managed to trim the deficit to 65-53 following a jumper by Stubblefield with 1:12 remaining in the game, but it was too late for a comeback attempt by the Falcons.

STAT OF THE GAME

Montevallo recorded 12 steals in the season opener against the Hornets, led by Goldsby with a career-high seven steals. The Falcons finished with 12 steals just once during the 2014-15 season.

UP NEXT

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, Nov. 18 with a non-conference contest against LeMoyne-Owen College at Trustmark Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
