How it Happened
The Falcons had four players score in double figures and shot 60 percent from the field to score a season high 80 points on the Lions in tonight's matchup.
In the first period the Falcons came out swinging and jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of the period. A quick three pointer from the Lions made the score 7-5 early in the first period. Both teams went on a scoring drought with neither team scoring until 3:25 left in the period when Tori Pharr hit a jumper to give the Falcons a four point lead. UNA tried to take the lead back but the Falcons were able to hold off the Lions and close out the period with the 12-11 lead.
The Lions took the lead for the first time in the game early in the second period after a made three pointer to start the period. However, Katherine Goldsby knotted the game at 14-14 when she drove the lane for a layup. Jacquelyn Thompson hit a three pointer on the Falcons next possession to retake the lead over the Lions. The game went back and forth until the Lions put together an 8-0 run to retake the lead at 25-19. A pair of layups and a three pointer pulled the Falcons within a point of the lead. However, the Lions held off the Falcons attack and entered the half with the 37-34 lead.
Goldsby got the third period going for the Falcons with a quick layup to start the period and cut the Lions lead to one point. Both teams matched each other blow for blow before the Falcons were able to push the lead to five points (46-41) midway through the third period. The Lions clawed their way back in to eventually retake a one point lead but as fast as they got it the Falcons took it right back and pushed their lead back out to five points (60-55). A layup at the end of the period by the Lions cut the Falcons lead to 50-57 as they headed into the game's final period.
The Lions retook the lead at the beginning of the fourth period with a jumper and a layup to give them 61-60 advantage over the Falcons. Goldsby helped the Falcons retake the lead with a jumper and then a pair of layups by Courtney McKenzie helped the Falcons push that lead up to five points. The Falcons did not relinquish the lead again until 3:34 left in the final period. A three pointer by the Lions gave them a 71-70 lead over the Falcons. The lead was short lived as McKenzie hit a layup to put the Falcons on top and they never looked back. Down the stretch the Falcons were able to close out the Lions and seal the 80-71 victory.
Stat of the Game
The Falcons shot 60 percent from the field and had four players score in double figures in tonight's victory. Ashley Dunstan, RayVon Christian, Katija Tarailo, and McKenzie all had career nights in scoring for the Falcons.
Dunstan led the team with 19 points and went 3-for-5 from three point range.
Christian and McKenzie both scored 15 points in tonight's victory and McKenzie grabbed a team high six rebounds.
Tarailo also was a menace on the glass, grabbing six boards and also tied her career high of 10 points.
