West Georgia holds off Falcons 86-78 in non-conference play

HOW IT HAPPENED

A tip-in by senior Terrell Lipkins with 15:03 remaining in the first half gave the Falcons a 7-4 lead in a tight game early. West Georgia used a 9-0 run midway through the opening half to give the Wolves a 20-11 lead with 9:03 left in the half.

Montevallo chipped away at the deficit over the next five minutes before taking a 25-24 lead on a layup by senior Tevin Worthy with 4:07 left in the half. A 3-pointer by Iakeem Alston gave the Wolves a 30-27 lead with 1:54 remaining in the half.

However, sophomore Vaughn Autry knocked down a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 33-32 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Falcons led by as many as three points early in the second half, the last time following a 3-pointer by junior Logan Kelley with 17:44 remaining in the game to give Montevallo a 40-37 lead.

However, it turned out to be the Falcons' last lead in the game as a 13-2 run by the Wolves gave West Georgia a 50-42 lead. Montevallo trimmed the deficit to 50-48 with a quick 6-0 run, capped with a free throw by senior Bryant Orange, but the Wolves went on a 10-1 run to take their first double-digit lead in the contest.

West Georgia led by as many as 12 points down the stretch while holding off the Falcons in the final minutes.

STAT OF THE GAME

West Georgia shot 80 percent (24-of-30) at the charity stripe, while the Falcons made just 63 percent (15-of-24) attempts from the free-throw line.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Senior Terrell Lipkins scored a season-high 27 points on 10-of-23 shooting from the floor, including a 4-of-8 performance beyond the arc, and knocking down 3-of-4 attempts at the charity stripe. Lipkins finished just three points shy of tying his career high 30 points he scored against Wheeling Jesuit during his junior season at the University of Charleston.

Sophomore Vaughn Autry scored three points and grabbed two rebounds in 16 minutes in his first action with the Falcons this season.

The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Dec. 1 with a non-conference game against Stillman College at Trustmark Arena. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
