HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons got off to a slow start in the first period as the Patriots opened the game on a 7-0 run. Ashley Dunstan scored the game's first points for the Falcons at the 5:12 mark with a three pointer. After a missed layup the Falcons pushed up the floor to score in transition off of a Katherine Goldsby layup to cut the Patriots lead to 7-5. The first period went back and forth and the Falcons trailed at the end of the first period 15-12.
In the second period the Falcons and the Patriots countered the other's offensive attacks with the Patriots only able to extend their lead to five before the Falcons began to cut into it. At the 5:39 mark the Falcons tied up the game at 21-21 off of a layup from Morgan Smith. After making the Patriots take a bad three point shot the Falcons took the lead 23-21 off of a Courtney McKenzie layup. The Falcons were able to push their lead to three points before the Patriots tied up the game to head into halftime 26-26.
The third period went much the same way as the second period with neither team able to create any separation from the other. The largest lead of the half came at the 6:35 mark when the Falcons took a 34-30 lead. The third period featured three lead changes and the Falcons held the advantage at the end, 41-39.
In the fourth period the Falcons were able to extend their lead to six points at the 7:09 minute mark off of a McKenzie jump shot. The Falcons were able to hold off the Patriots attacks until the 48 second mark when a three pointer from the wing gave Francis Marion the 57-56 lead. The Falcons were unable to retake the lead from the Patriots as Francis Marion iced the game away from the free throw line to seal the 61-58 victory.
