HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Terrell Lipkins finished 6-of-6 at the charity stripe in the final minute of the contest to lift the Falcons to a 78-72 win over Augusta in Peach Belt Conference play.
Augusta had the upper hand early in the game, with a 3-pointer by Aaron Byrd giving the Jaguars a 19-15 advantage midway through the opening half. The Jaguars extended their lead to 26-20 following a jumper by Keith Crump with 8:54 left in the half.
Montevallo closed the first half with a 15-6 run to carry a 35-32 lead into the locker room at halftime. A layup by junior Kevin Kelly with 35 seconds remaining capped the run to end the half
The Falcons opened the second half with a 7-2 run and a three-point play by senior Malik Fields gave Montevallo a 42-34 lead with 18:31 remaining in the contest, marking its largest lead in the game.
The Jaguars responded with a 6-0 run, capped with a layup by Tommy Williams, to trim the Falcons' lead to 42-40. The Falcons held onto a small lead for the next 12 minutes before Crump made two free throws with 5:08 remaining to tie the game at 63-63.
Deane Williams made a layup to give Augusta a 65-63 lead, its first lead in the second half, with 4:29 left in the game.
Sophomore Vaughn Autry drained a 3-pointer with 2:41 remaining to put Montevallo on top 68-66 and give the Falcons the lead for good. A jumper by Crump trimmed the Falcons' lead to 72-70 with 34 seconds remaining before Lipkins sealed the win with six free throws down the stretch.
STAT OF THE GAME
Two days after shooting a season-best 70 percent from the charity stripe against Francis Marion, the Falcons stayed hot at the free-throw line against the Jaguars. Montevallo shot a season-high 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the charity stripe against Augusta.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
The Falcons won their fifth consecutive game with the victory against Augusta, marking the seventh consecutive season Montevallo has put together a winning streak of five games or more during the year.
Senior Terrell Lipkins scored a career-high 32 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and a 7-of-8 performance at the free-throw line.
