HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo opened the match with a 12-4 run in the opening set, fueled with three kills by sophomore Kristy Bohan. The Falcons held off a late rally by the Warriors to secure a 25-17 win in the first set, with a pair of Southern Wesleyan errors and a kill by senior Nicole Holton closing out the frame. Bohan and Holton led Montevallo with five kills each in the opening frame.
The second set remained tight throughout the frame, with the largest lead coming late in the set with Southern Wesleyan taking a 21-16 advantage. Montevallo responded with a 6-1 run of its own to tie the set following a kill by Holton. The Falcons survived in the extended set, securing a 29-27 victory in the frame on a kill by Bohan and an attack error by the Warriors.
Southern Wesleyan opened the third set with a 7-0 run. Montevallo managed to trim the deficit to 16-13 midway through the frame following a service ace by sophomore Grace Harris, but the Warriors held on down the stretch for a 25-17 win to take their first set in the match.
The Warriors captured the fourth set with a 25-19 victory in the frame. Holton gave the Falcons their lone lead in the frame with a service ace early in the set, which put Montevallo up 2-1. Southern Wesleyan quickly took the lead back and led throughout the remainder of the set.
Montevallo overcame a 3-0 deficit early in the fifth and final set to clinch the match with a 15-13 victory. The Falcons trailed in the early stages of the frame before a service ace by Harris put Montevallo on top, 11-10. A kill by Bohan gave the Falcons a 14-10 advantage before the Warriors reeled off three points in a row to make things interesting. Bohan capped the victory with a kill to close out the match.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Bohan registered a career-high 11 blocks in the victory over the Warriors. The sophomore from Huntsville, Alabama surpassed her previous career high of eight blocks against UNC Pembroke during her freshman season. Bohan posted her first double-double of the season with 19 kills and 11 blocks.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
Senior Briana Marquez registered her second double-double of the year with a season-high 49 assists to go along with 12 digs.
Sophomore Chandler Cooper recorded three kills to go along with two blocks and two digs in her first action of the season.
The Falcons' 4-1 start to the season marks the best start since the 2005 season, when Montevallo reeled off nine victories in a row to start the year.
