Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Montevallo Advance to GSC Semifinals After Holding Off Christian Bros.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team played their final game at Varsity Field in a Gulf South Quarterfinal in their first season since returning from the Peach Belt Conference.

Christian Brothers were the more aggressive team in the first half, but the hosts took advantage of a set piece opportunity. The Falcons were up before the break thanks to GSC Freshman of the Year, Cesare Marconi. Vladik Margolin's free-kick was allowed to bounce in the box before being prodded home at the far post by Marconi to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Marconi continued influencing the game after the restart. The Italian doubled the advantage in the second half from another set piece. It was his 10th goal of the season and proved to be decisive on the night.  Marconi took a free kick and bent it past the goalkeeper as the Falcons jumped ahead 2-0.

Christian Brothers' top scorer, Brendan Bennett halved the deficit in the second period to make it a 2-1 game.

Xavi Lao had a chance to equalize after the Falcons conceded a penalty, but the Spaniard skied the penalty shot over Robert Kuta's goal.

Montevallo held on to advance to the semifinals against top-seeded West Alabama on Friday in Montgomery. The Falcons hope to avenge the 2-0 loss to the Tigers from earlier in the season. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT.

The Falcons have put together back-to-back winning seasons and have the chance to knock off the top side in defending champs, West Alabama.

HOW IT HAPPENED

32' | Cesare Marconi opened the scoring from a set piece after a period of Buccaneer's pressure. Vladik Margolin's free kick from the right side of the field was allowed to bounce in the box before the Falcons leading scorer opened the scoring.

59' | Marconi added a second and doubled the lead after the break. Goalkeeper Viktor Hoestbo and his defensive wall were still getting set up, but the Italian took a quick free kick. The effort caught the Bucs defense asleep and caught the team off guard.

74' | Brendan Bennett brought the visitors back into the game for a frantic final 15 minutes. Blake Lashlee assisted the striker for his 9th goal of the campaign.
