MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Â The University of Montevallo men's basketball team held off visiting Oakwood University for a 73-69 victory in a non-conference contest De. 9 at Trustmark Arena.
Montevallo overcame a poor shooting night from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe as the Falcons outlasted Oakwood in a 73-69 victory in a non-conference contest despite shooting 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from 3-point range and 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from the free-throw line.
Oakwood didn't fare much better from the floor, shooting 38 percent overall, 28 percent from beyond the arc and 54.5 percent from the charity stripe.
Montevallo (6-4) raced out to a 21-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game before Oakwood rallied late in the opening half to carry a 38-36 lead into the break.
The Ambassadors stretched their lead to as many as nine points early in the second half and led for the first 16 minutes of the half before Montevallo took the lead for good on a layup by junior Zach Jackson with 3:15 left in the game.
Senior Jamaar Taylor led the Falcons with 22 points on 9-ov-16 shooting from the floor while also grabbing six rebounds.
Senior Julio Guity posted the first double-double of his collegiate career after contributing 12 points and a career-high 21 rebounds.
Junior Chris Williams added nine points and three rebounds, while senior Deshawn Jones finished with eight points and five assists.
