HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo remained in first place in the Peach Belt Conference West Division standings with a 85-72 win over visiting Columbus State on Senior Day at Trustmark Arena.

After a 5-0 run to open the game, the Falcons allowed 11 straight points to the visitors. It was the last lead for Columbus State.

The Falcons only committed one turnover in the first half and finished with a season low six in the game. The Falcons did not allow their four points off of turnovers until the final minutes of the game.

The Cougars trailed at half by six points after a huge 22-point first half by senior Javonte Douglas. The senior finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds in the game.

The Falcons continued their sharp shooting in the second half. Senior Kevin Kelly and junior Jamar Taylor scored 18 and 19, respectively, in a stellar performance. The Falcons shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the game.

JaCori Payne dominated for the Cougars, scoring 28 points.

The Falcons pick up an 11th conference victory and home win against a Columbus State team that has now lost three in a row. Montevallo is currently on a five-game winning streak, boosting its chances of hosting a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal contest with today's win.

STAT OF THE GAME

Montevallo shot 44.4 percent from the perimeter and 82.1 from the line to go along with their impressive 52.9 percent shooting from the floor. Javonte Douglas' big day was his 13th double double of the season.

UP NEXT

Despite playing their last home game, the Falcons have two more road tests left in the next two weeks. The first of the two final games is on Wednesday in Dahlonega, Georgia, as. Montevallo will try to avenge a home loss against the University of North Georgia on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tipoff is set for 6:30 Central/7:30 Eastern between the top two teams in the Peach Belt West Division.
