HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo swept a doubleheader on the road at Georgia Southwestern in its first Peach Belt Conference series, taking the opener 13-3 before surviving in a 9-5 win in extra innings in the nightcap.
Georgia Southwestern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the opener before the Falcons scored nine runs in the top of the third inning. Freshman Mariel Bertossi highlighted the frame with a two-run single and three runs scored on an error in left field by the Hurricanes. Junior Celestia Davila and freshman Holly LaForce also added RBI singles in the inning.
Following two runs by Georgia Southwestern in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Dylan Bailey capped the scoring for the Falcons with a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Abbey Pratt earned the win in the circle for the Falcons.
The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap to take an early 2-0 lead on a two-run single by junior Kelsey Vining.
Montevallo extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run single by Bailey. LaForce pushed the Falcons' lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth with a RBI single.
The Hurricanes scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. A two-run double in the frame by Kaley Sikes tied the game at 5-5.
The Falcons broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning on their way to the doubleheader sweep. Freshman Haley Barnette scored on a bases-loaded walk to Bailey before Vining plated two runs with a triple and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Lauren Van Steenwyk.
Pratt earned another win in the nightcap after pitching three innings in relief.
STAT OF THE DAY
Sophomore Abbey Pratt registered the win in the circle in both games of the doubleheader after giving up just three earned runs with five strikeouts in nine innings combined in the series.

The Falcons will return home to face Birmingham-Southern College in a non-conference game Tuesday, March 7 at Orr Park. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
