HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo earned a spot in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament after splitting a doubleheader with visiting UNC Pembroke. The Falcons took down the Braves 4-1 in the first game of the doubleheader before dropping the second game 11-2.

The Falcons plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning in the opener to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior Kelsey Vining led off the frame with a walk and sophomore Lauren Van Steenwyk followed with a single through the left side before scoring on a two-run single by freshman Mariel Bertossi.

Montevallo added another run in the bottom of the third inning when junior Celestia Davila singled up the middle and advanced two bases on a pair of groundouts before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 3-0 advantage.

The Falcons pushed their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman pinch runner Brianna Stella replaced sophomore Lady Sarah Federico after a single and scored on a RBI single by Van Steenwyk.

UNC Pembroke scored its lone run in the opener on a RBI single by Alex Watkins in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore Abbey Pratt earned the win in the circle after allowing just one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts in a complete game.

The Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game following a two-run homer by Taylor Gerhart down the left-field line.

Montevallo tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning following a pair of RBI sacrifice fly outs by junior Dylan Bailey and Van Steenwyk.

Abbey Walters blasted a grand-slam home run to right-center field in the top of the fourth inning and Gerhart followed with a RBI double before a two-run shot down the left-field line by Watkins, which capped a seven-run inning and gave UNC Pembroke a 9-2 advantage.

Watkins added a two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to cap the scoring for the Braves.
