Falcons earn split with PBC leader Armstrong State in doubleheader

HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo earned a split with Peach Belt Conference leader Armstrong State, dropping the opener of a doubleheader 9-0 in a six-inning affair before bouncing back with a 6-0 shutout in the nightcap.

The Falcons managed just two hits in the first game of the doubleheader, with freshmen Haley Barnette and Brianna Stella producing the only offense in the game.

Logan Harrell gave the Pirates an early lead with a first-inning grand slam and Armstrong State went on to score two more runs in the fourth inning and walked off early on a three-run homer by Jane Trzaska in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Montevallo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by junior Kelsey Vining in the nightcap.

The Falcons plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Holly LaForce and junior Darbi Duke scored on an error by the Pirates before a RBI single by sophomore Lady Sarah Federico accounted for the final run in the frame.

A solo homer by junior Dylan Bailey gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning before Vining scored the Falcons' final run in the game on an error by the Pirates in the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Abbey Pratt earned the win in the circle after registering seven strikeouts in a complete-game shutout.

STAT OF THE DAY

After being shutout with only two hits in the first game of the doubleheader, Montevallo bounced back with six runs on 11 hits in the second game of the doubleheader.

UP NEXT

The Falcons will travel to St. Augustine, Florida to take on Flagler College in a doubleheader Sunday, April 9. First pitch in the opening game is set for 12 p.m. Eastern/11 a.m. Central.
