MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half to defeat Union University 66-63 after senior Julio Guity scored the go-ahead basket with 2.6 seconds remaining in a Gulf South Conference contest Jan. 20 at Trustmark Arena.
Montevallo (11-9 overall, 6-5 in Gulf South Conference) overcame a double-digit deficit in the first half, trailing by as many as 17 against the Bulldogs (8-11 overall, 2-9 in Gulf South Conference) before making a comeback late in the game.
Senior Jamaar Taylor led the Falcons with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor and made all eight free-throw attempts while grabbing six rebounds.
Junior Chris Williams contributed 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Senior Julio Guity finished with nine points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 17 points in the opening half after making 8 of their first 15 attempts from beyond the arc, while limiting the Falcons to 0-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.
Senior Tyler Brough finally got a 3-pointer to fall with 1:47 remaining in the half and Montevallo trimmed the deficit to 38-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The Falcons opened the second half with a 10-2 run and tied the contest at 40-40 following a layup by Williams with 14:40 remaining in the game.
Union built a 61-56 lead following a pair of free throws by K.C. Goodwin with 3:42 left in the game before the Falcons ended the contest with a 10-2 run down the stretch to secure the come-from-behind victory.
