UM's Upset Bid at Jacksonville State Falls Short, 73-68

JACKSONVILLE, Ala.  – University of Montevallo men's basketball led with 2:30 remaining, but was unable to hold on for a preseason upset at Jacksonville State University on Tuesday, Oct. 29, falling 73-68. It is the second-closest margin in Montevallo history against an NCAA Division I opponent. 

Florida Atlantic University transfer Cedric Jackson made his Montevallo debut with a game-tying jumper in the opening minute and went on to score 11 points for the Falcons. UM then took a 6-4 lead, but JSU responded with a 13-4 run to lead 17-10 in the first seven minutes of action. . 

Montevallo bounced back with a 12-0 run to take control of the first half at the 10-minute mark. The Falcons' largest lead of the first half was eight points, 28-20, on a Kevin Smith layup with 6:41 to play. UM trailed only once, 30-29, at the five-minute mark to close out the half. Ivan Smith's layup off a turnover with 28 seconds left in the first half, broke a 35-35 tie to put UM on top, 37-35 at halftime.

Jonas Parker led UM with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 at the line in the first half but was held to 0-for-4 shooting in the second half and two free throws to finish with 14 points.


The Falcons stretched their lead to 44-37 to open the second half. Jacksonville State capitalized off a pair of turnovers to cap an 8-0 run and move back in front, 45-44, on a De'torrion Ware 3-pointer. JSU's lead eventually grew to eight points, 63-55, with 7:28 to play.

A few minutes later, after chipping into the lead, Xavier Malcom scooped a steal and pushed it up the floor to Wade Lowman for a fast break layup to give Montevallo a 66-65 lead with 3:29 to play. Parker later knocked down two free throws to lead by three, but JSU fought back on consecutive baskets.

JSU regained its lead, 69-68, when Marek Welsch intercepted a pass and laid it in on the other end to regain JSU's lead with 2:10 to play. It was the last field goal of the game as the Gamecocks closed the game on the free throw line with Welsch and Derek St. Hilaire knocking down a pair each in the final minute.


UM had four players score in double figures: Wade Lowman (15), Jonas Parker (14), Ivan Smith (13), Cedric Jackson (11).

Five JSU players scored 10 or more: Jacara Cross (13), Elias Harden (11), Derek St. Hilaire (10), Marek Welsch (10), Maros Zeliznak (10)


Montevallo will open the 2019-2020 regular season Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 9-10, when it hosts the Gulf South Conference / Sunshine State Conference Challenge in Trustmark Arena. Montevallo hosts the University of Tampa on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m., followed by No. 16 Alabama Huntsville vs. Saint Leo at 6 p.m. On Sunday, the schedule flips with UAH meeting Tampa at 12 p.m., followed by Montevallo and Saint Leo at 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES
  • The five-point margin is Montevallo's second-closest against a DI opponent in program history. The Falcons lost by three points, 65-62, at Louisiana Tech in December 2003.
  • The Falcons were the better shooting team on the night, shooting 48.2 percent (27-56) from the floor and 40 percent from the 3-point arc, but shot 66.7 percent at the free throw line. JSU shot 28.6 percent long range and 43.9 percent overall, while hitting 73.9 percent at the line.
  • Montevallo outscored the Gamecocks 26-16 on points off turnovers after capitalizing on 18 JSU turnovers.
  • JSU out-rebounded the Falcons 39-26, including a 17-7 edge on the offensive glass, and edged UM, 15-12, in second-chase points. 
  • Bench points were key for Jacksonville State, with the Gamecocks scoring 41 points off the bench to UM's nine.
  • JSU's Jacara Cross led both teams with six offensive rebounds.
  • Both teams' largest lead was eight points.
