Falcons battle back to defeat Lee 3-2 in GSC play

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team defeated the Lee University Flames 3-2 in the Falcons' fourth Gulf South Conference win of the season.

Montevallo alternated the first three sets with the Flames before forcing a fifth set after a 25-14 win in the fourth. The Falcons took down Lee 15-11 in the deciding fifth set to win the match 3-2 overall.

The Falcons improved to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Lee fell to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in the GSC.

  • Desiree Rodriguez led the Falcons offensively with a career-high 21 kills in the match.
  • Brioni Dixon chipped in 14 kills for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • Lee and Montevallo battled early in the match before the Flames took a 9-4 lead over the Falcons, following five straight points.
  • The Flames maintained a lead over the Falcons the rest of the way in the first, winning 25-20.
Set 2
  • After three quick points by the Flames to open the second set, Montevallo added four straight to take a 4-3 lead, following an attack error by Lee.
  • Montevallo extended its lead to 7-4 over Lee following a pair of Lee attack errors and a kill from Brioni Dixon.
  • The Falcons continued to control the second set with a 17-14 lead midway through. Lee responded with five straight to take a 19-17 lead.
  • Montevallo halted a Flames' comeback down the stretch, winning the second set 25-22 after a kill from Hannah Fernandez and Desiree Rodriguez.
 
 
SET 3
  • Montevallo and Lee traded points throughout majority of the third set. With the set tied 15-15 the Flames rattled off five straight points to hold a 20-15 lead over the Falcons.
  • The Falcons were unable to tie or retake the lead and fell to the Flames 25-19 in the third set.
 
SET 4
  • Lee controlled the momentum of the fourth set early on, jumping out to an 8-4 lead over the Falcons.
  • Montevallo responded with five straight points to take a 10-8 lead over Lee following a kill from Rodriguez.
  • After Lee stopped the Falcons' run at five, Montevallo again found rhythm scoring five straight to hold a 15-9 lead, following another kill from Rodriguez.
  • Montevallo was able to control the set the rest of the way, forcing a fifth set with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.
 
SET 5
  • Lee took control of the fifth set early on, jumping out to a 7-3 lead.
  • Montevallo tied the Flames 7-7 following a four point one that included three Lee errors.
  • After Lee regained the lead 8-7, the Falcons responded with three straight to take a 10-8 lead over the Flames, capped with a kill from Rodriguez.
  • Montevallo outscored the Flames the rest of the way, winning the fifth set 15-11, capped with a kill from Danielle Lee.
 
 
 
 
After falling behind 2-1 in the match to the Flames, the Falcons responded with wins in the fourth and fifth set to win the match 3-2.
