UM Beats Union, Locks Up Home GSC Quarterfinal Game

Box Score
ALABASTER, Ala. – Montevallo scored two goals in the second half to take control en route to posting a 3-1 win over Union in a Gulf South Conference match Friday afternoon at Thompson Intermediate School.
The match was originally scheduled for Thursday night at Georgine Lemak Field, but heavy rain and winds forced the postponement.
Montevallo's win moved the Falcons (11-3-3, 9-2-1) into third in the GSC standings and also clinched a home match in the opening round of the GSC Tournament on Nov. 12. A win in their regular-season finale against Christian Brothers on Saturday would give the Falcons the No. 2 seed, but a loss could drop Montevallo possibly as far as the fourth seed.
Kira Bochard got the offense going for the Falcons in the 28th minute, getting her fourth goal of the season off an assist by Samara Lino, who now has three assists this year for UM. The lead was short-lived, though, as the Bulldogs tied the match seconds later on an own goal. The match went into halftime tied at 1.
Reserve Madison Madewell gave the Falcons an offensive boost early in the second half, scoring on a rebound off a direct kick in the 53rd minute to put UM ahead, 2-1.
It stayed 2-1 until the 76th minute, when Union (2-13, 1-11) was whistled for a foul in the penalty area, giving the Falcons a penalty kick. Medhali Hernandez stepped to the spot and promptly converted it to give UM an insurance goal and make it 3-1 with just under a quarter of an hour to go in the match.
