CARROLLTON, Ga. – The winningest coach in Montevallo men's basketball history added one more bullet point to his future hall-of-fame résumé as
Danny Young, who has been at the helm of the program since 2003, won his 400th career game when the Falcons knocked off the University of West Georgia, 81-78, Tuesday evening.
"I did not know about the milestone until someone told me after the game," said Young, who now sits at 400-178 in 19 years as a head coach. "It's an exciting milestone. You don't dream about that things like this when you first get into coaching."
But the milestone victory for Young didn't come without a late rally by Montevallo.
After Montevallo (7-4, 3-0) took a 45-37 lead into the locker room for halftime, West Georgia (2-8, 0-2) outscored the Falcons 18-10 over the first 6:50 of the second half to tie the game at 55. From there, the Wolves went on to extend their lead to as many as eight at 66-58 with 9:45 left in the game.
It wasn't until
Xavier Malcom sank a jumper at the 8:27 mark that Montevallo made it a one-possession game. Karlos Odum and
Cedric Jackson traded baskets for their respective teams, before Jackson capped an and-one opportunity to cut the Falcons deficit to one with 7:05 remaining in the second half.
West Georgia, again, got out to a sizeable lead when the Wolves led by seven at 78-71 with 2:37 remaining in the game. But that was the final time UWG managed to put the ball through the net.
Over the next 94 seconds, Malcom sank another 3-point basket, before stealing the ball, which ultimately led to a Jackson jumper in the paint. Down 78-76 with 41 seconds,
Jack Youmans missed a 3-point shot, but
Wade Lowman gathered the loose ball and made a contested layup to tie the game at 78 with 37 seconds left. He followed the layup with a made free throw to capitalize on the old-fashion three-point play to give the Falcons a one-point lead.
Lowman, again, showed to be a difference maker as he blocked a Michael Zabatakis jumper with 11 seconds left. After Lowman's block went out of bounds, the Wolves had another opportunity to take the lead, but Greg James missed a 3-point shot with seven seconds left.
Following two missed free throws by the Falcons, Malcom sank his two free throw opportunities to cap Montevallo's 10-0 run.
West Georgia tried to attempt another potential game-tying 3-pointer, but Zabatakis was unable to get a shot off before the final horn.
"I thought we played really hard down the stretch," Young said. "I thought we really listened the last couple minutes of the game after struggling throughout the first 18 minutes of the second half. I thought they really bought in and played really hard those last few minutes."
Young will attempt to start his march towards career win No. 500 on Saturday, Dec. 21, when Montevallo travels to Rome, Ga., to face Shorter University in a Gulf South contest that's scheduled for 3 p.m. central time.
