Flack’s 32 fuels Montevallo’s win over West Georgia

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. – If the Gulf South Conference didn't know Shyan Flack before Montevallo's game Tuesday afternoon, it knows about her now as the sophomore scored a career-high 32 points on 14-of-21 shooting in the Falcons' 94-77 victory over the University of West Georgia.

Tuesday's win marks the fifth straight for Montevallo and keeps the Falcons undefeated in Gulf South Conference action, while snapping West Georgia's six-game winning streak and the Wolves' streak of four consecutive games of scoring 90-plus points.

"It was a huge win," said Montevallo head coach Gary van Atta. "Our girls just came to play tonight. It's a big win against a really good team, but it's still early in the season, so it's only the beginning.

"Scott (Groninger) does a great job over here and I hate that we only play them once a year, because they're only a couple hours down the road and it's a big rivalry."

Aaliyah Rice, who finished one point away of her career high as the senior went for 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, start the theme of the night for Montevallo when she made a layup 89 seconds into the game to give the Falcons a quick 2-0 lead. By the end of the night, Montevallo scored 58 of its 94 points in the paint. The Falcons improved their shooting during each of the game's four quarters as they progressed from 37.5 percent in the first to 42.9 in the second, 52.6 in the third and 62.5 in the fourth.

Along with the inside play, Flack's performance was another consistent for the Falcons. By the end of the first quarter, the sophomore already had 10 points and six rebounds in just under nine minutes of game action. She notched her third straight double-double when she collected a defense rebounds less than two minutes into the third period. Flack surpassed her previous career high in points scored – 25 against Christian Brothers during the 2018-19 season – with 5:25 remaining in the game.

"We've said from the very beginning that she's a really special player," van Atta said. "I think she's only going to continue to get better and better."

Paige Ward nearly joined her teammate with a double-double as the guard finished with nine points – all coming behind the 3-point arc – and nine rebounds. Marisa Snodgrass continued her stellar freshman season as she scored six points, brought down five rebounds and dished out four assists.

Montevallo (8-1, 3-0) will put its undefeated conference record on the line again when the Falcons travel to Rome, Ga., to play Shorter University on Saturday, Dec. 21 with tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. central time.
