Lowman, Jackson record double-doubles as Falcons fall at Miles

FAIRFIELD, Ala. - Despite a pair of double-doubles, Miles College got the best of Montevallo Saturday afternoon as the Falcons fell, 72-60, to the Golden Bears.

Things started well for Montevallo (6-4) as Cedric Jackson, who finished the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds, sank one of his two 3-point baskets to give the Falcons a 3-0 less than a minute into the game. Just minutes later, Jackson's second 3-pointer of the contest extended Montevallo's lead to 11-6 at the 16:07 mark of the first half. The lead eventually ballooned to 15-9 after two Ivan Smith layups.

Miles (7-1) made it a one-possession game four minutes later, but Xavier Malcom pushed the Montevallo advantage back to five, which became six after the Golden Bears split a pair of free throws combined with a Kevin Smith layup.

The game saw its first tie when Nathan Ferguson sank a 3-point basket for Miles to make it 27-27 with 3:46 remaining in the first half. The Golden Bears went on a 7-0 scoring run over the remaining time to take a 34-27 lead into the locker rooms.

Montevallo cut its deficit to 34-31 after back-to-back layups from Wade Lowman, who concluded the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds, with 16:48 left in the game. From there, Miles went on a 13-2 run to expand its lead to 47-33 over the next four minutes.

A pair of Lowman free throws made it 50-42 with 8:45 remaining, but Avery Brown, who entered the game as Miles' leading scorer, hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Bears a double-figure lead, again, which it held onto for the rest of the game.

Romario Spence, who started his fourth straight game, played a season-high 38 points and scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting and brought down a career-high eight rebounds.

Montevallo will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 17, when the Falcons travel to Birmingham, Ala., to play the University of Alabama at Birmingham in an exhibition game with tip time scheduled for 7 p.m. central time.
