RECAP

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak, with an upset win over No.25 ranked Lee University at home 66-60, in a Gulf South Conference contest Feb 7.

Montevallo handed Lee their fifth loss of the season and third in the GSC. The Flames were ranked third in the South Region poll and No.25 nationally in the D2SIDA poll. 

This is the first win over a top 25 team under Head Coach Gary Van Atta, in his third year during his second stint at Montevallo. 

Montevallo shot 57 percent (26-of-45) from the floor and 14 percent (1-of-7) from beyond the arc, while Lee shot just 29 percent (18-of-62) from the field and 33 percent (8-of-24) from 3-point range.

The Falcons outrebounded the Flames 39 to 29. Lee outrebounded Montevallo offensively 11-4, outscoring the Falcons 4-1 in second chance points.

The Falcons led 8-4 in the first, following a layup from Rice with 6:13 remaining in the period. The Flames responded with a 7-2 run to end the period leading 11-10, capped by a jumper from Camryn Grant.

With 2:54 remaining in the second period, Freshman Savannah Lee hit a jumper to give Montevallo a six point lead 23-17. 

Lee outscored the Falcons down the stretch of the second period 11-4 to lead 28-27 at the half, after a jumper from Haley Schubert in the final seconds. 

Lee held their largest lead of the game, with 5:27 remaining in the third period 41-37 after a three pointer from Abby Bertram.
 

 The Falcons then responded closing out the period on 10-2 run, capped by a three pointer from junior Paige Ward, with 23 seconds remaining, to lead 47-43. 

The Falcons took the 47-43 lead in to the fourth period, and led the Flames the rest of the game. 

Flack gave Montevallo their largest lead, 55-46 with 6:40 remaining in the fourth period after a made layup. 

Lee cut the Falcons' lead to two with 1:37 remaining, but Rice responded for Montevallo, hitting a layup with 33 seconds to go, to lead 61-57. 

With 18 seconds remaining, Rice made a pair of free-throws to extend Montevallo's lead to six, 65-59.

Montevallo upset the Flames 66-60, after sophomore Kiya Sain made a free-throw bringing the Falcons' point total to 66.

Flack grabbed a team-best ten rebounds, while Philpot and Ward each dished out a team-high four assists.

Montevallo will return to action Friday, Feb. 9 with a Gulf South Conference contest at home against the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Tip off is set for 2:00 p.m.
