MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Montevallo used a late second-half scoring run to remain undefeated in Gulf South Conference play as the Falcons knocked off Christian Brothers, 76-67, to move to 11-4, 7-0 on the season.
After Montevallo led 41-31 at halftime, Christian Brothers battled back in the second half to tie the game at 58 on a Malik Jones jumper with 7:37 left to play in the game.
Cedric Jackson then sparked what ended up being an 18-9 run for the Falcons that led UM to the win.
Jackson, who match
Wade Lowman for a team-high 20 points, sank a jumper less than 20 seconds later to give Montevallo a 60-58 lead. Jackson sank a 3-point basket to extend the Falcon lead to five seconds later.
Romario Spence hit a basket to setup back-to-back baskets by Jackson to give Montevallo some breathing room at 70-58 with 4:15 to play.
Christian Brothers (5-10, 2-6) snapped the 12-0 Montevallo scoring run when Daryl Lewis put the ball through the net with 3:53 remaining in the second half to make it a 10-point contest. Jaret Gassett cut the Bucs deficit to eight, but Spence, who joined
Xavier Malcom and
Kevin Smith with 10 points each, pushed it back to 10 by converting two free throw opportunities. Lewis made it a 7-point game when he sank a 3-point basket for CBU, but the Bucs missed two more opportunities and turned the ball over, which led to a Lowman dunk with 1:03 remaining in the game.
From there, Smith, who rounded out the quintet of starting that finished in double figures, sank two free throws with 41 seconds left to seal the Falcon victory.
Montevallo will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 16 when the Falcons host Lee University (12-3, 7-1) at 7:30 p.m.
