MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The depth of the 2019-20 Montevallo women's basketball team provided the difference in the Falcons' 64-59 win at Auburn University-Montgomery. The victory gives UM 13 wins on the season, which is the most in a single season by the Falcons since winning 17 during the 2012-13 season.
Twelve seconds after the opening tip, Montevallo (13-3, 7-2) was already ahead of AUM as
Aaliyah Rice, who finished with a team-high 19 points, finished a layup attempt off a pass from
Marisa Snodgrass, who was credited with the first of her six assists for the game. The lead only ballooned from there as Rice added two free throws, before
Kiya Sain made two layups, which were followed by a pair of
Shyan Flack made free throws. Snodgrass, Rice and
Paige Ward all put the ball through the net to give the Falcons an 18-2 lead with 3:38 left in the game's opening quarter.
AUM (9-8, 2-7) cut its deficit to one point following a Jordan Brewster 3-pointer with 7:13 left before halftime. However, that was the closest the Warhawks managed to get until an Alexia Wallace 3-point basket made it 31-29, Montevallo, in the closing seconds of the second quarter.
Victoria Morales gave AUM its first lead — 36-34 — when she sank a jumper at the 6:47 mark of the third quarter. Another Brewster 3-pointer extended AUM's lead to five just a minute lead.
After Ward sank another 3-point shot to send the game into the fourth quarter tied at 45, Flack, who finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, gave the Falcons a 47-45 lead in the opening minute of the fourth. Brewster, who finished with a game-high 28 points, tied the game at 54 with another 3-point basket with 5:24 left to play, but Rice sank two free throws to push Montevallo back ahead. It was Brewster, again, giving AUM the lead with another 3-point shot with 4:14 remaining.
Rice re-tied the game at 59 with 97 seconds to play with a layup, then gave Montevallo a one-point lead when she converted the old-fashion 3-point play. From there, Brewster and Catlin Carter both committed turnovers in a one-point game. After Flack missed two free throws with 21 seconds left, Sain collected the offensive rebound, then was sent to the free throw line after being fouled. She made both free throws to extend Montevallo's lead to 62-59.
After Brewster turned the ball over, again, Flack was fouled and made two free throws to extend the Falcons' lead to five with 15 seconds left.
Roni Richardson and Alexia Wallace both missed 3-point attempts for AUM in the closing seconds to seal Montevallo's win.
The Falcons return to action on Thursday, Jan. 23 when West Alabama visits Trustmark Arena for a Gulf South Conference game at 5:30 p.m.
