CARROLLTON, Ga. –
Xavier Malcom's thrilling game-winning three-pointer with six seconds remaining gave Montevallo a season-opening win over West Georgia on Wednesday night, 75-72.
Xavier Malcom (Hanceville, Alabama) led the Falcons with 22 points and was 6-14 (42%) from beyond the arc.
Travarus "Bob" Carroll (Birmingham, Alabama ) collected his first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while also swiping three steals.
Caleb Coleman (Hammond, Indiana) added 12 points and three blocks in the victory.
In a tight game with the Falcons leading most of the night, West Georgia's Keshawn Heard's layup with 5:21 to play in the second half gave the Wolves a 64-63 lead. It was West Georgia's first lead since 4:56 in the first half, when they led 24-23.
The Falcons regained the lead 70-69 on a Carroll layup with 1:23 to play. A Coleman layup for Montevallo and a 3-pointer from West Georgia's J.J. Barnes with 0:37 seconds to play set the stage for Malcom's game-winner.
"Xavier is a great shooter and hopefully will get many more opportunities for big shots like tonight," head coach
Danny Young said. "'X' looked very comfortable tonight and I thought he played great."
Montevallo shot 41 percent from the floor and scored 36 of their 75 points in the paint.
Latrell Carter (Memphis, Tennessee) added eight points on a perfect 4-4 from the floor night while
James McNeil (Queens, New York ) added nine points with four steals.
"We knew coming into this game that it would be a tough test for both teams," added Young. "I am really happy for the guys. They played really hard and tried to execute our game plan. With us not having a traditional preseason, it made preparing very challenging. What a great way to start out an extremely unusual year."
The Falcons head back out on the road next Wednesday, December 16th, to take on Valdosta State. The Blazers ended the Falcons' season last year in the GSC Quarterfinals. The Falcons and Blazers will tip at 6:00 pm central. Follow the Falcons all season long at
