MONTEVALLO, Ala. —The University of Montevallo men's basketball team appeared to be on the right side of the scoreboard during the closing stages of the second half, but Union University turned things around late then pulled away in overtime to earn an 80-72 win Thursday night.
After coming out for the second half, trailing 31-23, Montevallo took its first lead of the game on a
Cedric Jackson 3-pointer with 15:06 remaining in the game. Tyree Boykin, who entered the game as the Gulf South Conference's leading scorer at 20.0 points a game, answered with his own 3-point basket to push his point total to five with 14:47 left in the second half.
Jackson, again, knocked down a 3-point shot just 16 seconds later to give Montevallo (11-12, 7-8) a 39-38 advantage. The lead traded hands again following an Ousmane Gueye layup for Union and a
Romario Spence jumper for Montevallo.
Jackson, who finished with a game-high 23 points, gave Montevallo its largest lead — 44-40 — of the game when he finished on a layup with 10:44 remaining in the game. As Union (17-7, 11-5) began chipping away,
Ivan Smith connected on a 3-point shot to push the Falcons back out to a four-point lead with 9:09 left in the game.
The lead traded hands several more times over the next four minutes until Terrandus Smith gave Union a 55-54 lead with 4:57 remaining in the game. Jackson struck again with another 3-point shot to tie the game at 57 just over a minute later. However, Boykin took the game over as he went on a 6-0 personal scoring run to make it 63-60 Union with 2:11 to play. It was a Bulldog lead that was extended out to 65-60 with 104 seconds left in the game.
Smith, who finished the game with 11 points, cut the lead to 65-62 with a layup, then 65-63 as he capped an old-fashion three-point play. Boykin, who finished with 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting, including 1-of-7 from behind the 3-point arc, missed back-to-back 3-point shots, before Smith tied the game at 65 with a pull-up jumper from the elbow with 27 seconds left in the second half.
Union had two attempts at a game-winning basket but were until to get the ball through the net thus sending the game to an extra five-minute period, during which the Bulldogs outscored the Falcons, 15-7, to seal the game.
