MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo baseball team bounced back from Friday defeat to the University of West Florida with a 2-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader, but the Argonauts got the better of the Falcons in the second game 4-1.
In the first game, West Florida (4-5, 2-1) took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth when Bryant Harris, Jr., hit a solo home run off Montevallo (6-3, 1-2) starting pitcher
Gus Cunningham, who matched his career long with 6.0 innings pitched and scattered four hits, walked only one and struck out three before giving way to
Joel Cheatwood to start the seventh.
Cheatwood kept the Argonaut offense at bay over his 1.1 innings as his only baserunner was a walk, before
JD Kytle went the next 1.0 innings and allowed two hits and no runs.
Kytle earned his second win as a Falcon when
Davis Lott hit a go-ahead, two-run single through the right side of the diamond in the bottom of the eighth.
Chandler Ingram was credited with his second save when he got the final two outs in the top of the ninth.
In the second game, West Florida took a one-run lead in the top of the second on a suicide squeeze to advance runners at the corners. The Argonaut lead expanded to 3-0 the following inning with a two-run single.
Montevallo cut the deficit to two when
Ty Wooton singled home
Mitch Fleming during the bottom of the third. However, a sacrifice fly in the fifth pushed UWF's lead back to three and it stood there over the game's remaining two innings.
Montevallo will have a quick turnaround as the Falcons will play its fourth game in three days when UM hosts Lynn University on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12 p.m. CT.
