MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Last time the University of Montevallo played Christian Brothers University earlier this season,
Shyan Flack had her way on the court. Nothing changed when the two teams met again as the sophomore went for 31 points and 15 rebounds.
However, it was Christian Brothers (10-11, 9-8) which pulled out the win over Montevallo (16-8, 10-4) on Saturday afternoon as the Bucs edged the Falcons 94-86.
It was a 15-point first quarter that was the difference this go around as Christian Brothers got out to a 28-13 lead after the first 10-minute segment. After that, the Bucs managed to only outscore the Falcons by one — 24-23 — during the second quarter to take a 52-36 lead into the locker rooms.
Following a less-than-ideal first half, Montevallo went to work and spent the entire second half erasing its lead by outscoring Christian Brothers by four in the third and even four during the fourth quarter. But it wasn't enough as the Bucs kept its postseason hopes alive and held on for an eight-point victory.
While Flack accumulated her 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including 7 of 9 from the free throw line,
Paige Ward came on late with several 3-point baskets during the fourth quarter to help spark Montevallo's come-from-behind attempt. By the end of the game, Ward had knocked down five shots from behind the 3-point arc in 37 minutes.
Marisa Snodgrass, who was three rebounds shy of a triple-double the last time the two teams met, finished with nine points, six assists and two rebounds while playing a game-high 40 points.
Christian Brothers' Brynee Lytle, who entered the game leading the Gulf South Conference in scoring poured in a team-high 27 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 4 of 8 from 3-point land and 9 of 10 from the free throw, and brought down 10 rebounds and dished out five assists. Kelsey Adkins joined Lytle in 20-point land as she finished with 22 points, including knocking down five 3-pointers.
Montevallo will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 20 when the Falcons travel to Valdosta, Ga., to play Valdosta State University at 5 p.m. CT with aspirations of clinching a GSC postseason tournament berth.
