Falcons Smack Bulldogs For GSC Weekend Sweep

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Montevallo pounded out ten runs on twelve hits and beat the Union University Bulldogs 10-1, in a five inning run-rule, on Sunday morning. The win gave the Falcons a well-earned sweep of the Bulldogs, who came in with a record of 15-7.

The Falcons used an eight-run third inning to turn a 2-1 lead into a 10-1 lead. Thirteen Falcons came to the plate in the third.

Sierra Easterwood started the inning off with a walk and advanced to third base on a Haley Barnette single to center. Holly LaForce singled home Easterwood and a Carlee Mullinax walk loaded the bases for Brooke Ingram.

Ingram smoked a single through the first baseman's legs, a shot that scored LaForce and Easterwood.

A Brianna Stella double scored Mullinax and Ingram, after Ingram had stole second base.

After two walks to Bertossi and Easterwood to load the bases, Barnette singled home Stella.

LaForce followed with a two-run single to center, scoring Bertossi and Easterwood. The senior from Irvington, Ala was 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and a run scored.

"LaForce had a great weekend at the plate for us," said head coach Lindsay Vanover. "Her six RBI and .700 average was huge for us."

Meagan Schwieterman was equally impressive on Sunday. The junior reliever recorded 14 of the 15 Bulldog outs in the game and allowed just two hits in her 4.2 innings of work. Schwieterman faced just two batters over the minimum and struck out four.

"Every single player impacted this series," added head coach Lindsay Vanover. "It was great to see Meagan throw a strong game today along with Mabry and Mychael yesterday. The key to better pitching was knowing your hitters put 26 runs on the board."

Barnette and Ingram each added three hits and two RBI in the game.

Stella had two hits and two RBI.

Mullinax had one hit, a walk and scored a run.

"We know how tough it is to beat teams in this conference, so we said we must wake up and compete today," added Vanover. "We have been talking about how one day you are the star and the next day you help the star. A great teammate will help do whatever it takes to make the team great and that's what these girls did this weekend. I am so proud of them."

Montevallo (13-8, 8-4) gets right back into action on Tuesday. The Falcons travel to Georgia to take on their old PBC rival, the Columbus State Cougars, (11-8) in a midweek doubleheader. The Cougars are coming off a weekend sweep of their own, winning all four games of their Cougar Red, White & Blue Classic. The Cougars beat Erskine twice, West Alabama and Lynn. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00pm.
