Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's basketball team continued their winning ways on Friday night, defeating in-state conference foe Auburn University at Montgomery 92-76 on the road in the first of this two-game weekend series. The Falcons are now a perfect 3-0 on the season, playing strictly a Gulf South Conference schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Montevallo trailed 19-11 with 11:04 left in the first half before going on a 14-3 run to take their first lead of the night.
James McNeil hit a 3-pointer to push UM ahead 25-22 with 6:08 left in the first half, and the Falcons never trailed again.
The Warhawks stuck around, tying the game at 55 with 12:39 left to play thanks to an 8-2 run. However, Montevallo stayed composed and was able to outscore AUM 37-21 from that point on. Leading 62-60, Montevallo's
Braxton Bertolette drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Falcons their first double-digit lead of the game with 7:55 remaining. Bertolette led UM with 20 points, making all four of his attempts from beyond the arc.
It was a complete team effort from the Falcons tonight, with four players reaching double figures. Along with Bertolette's 20, McNeil poured in 19,
Latrell Carter scored 12 and
Mason Shifflett added 11. As a team, the Falcons shot just over 58 percent from the floor and went 11-for-23 from deep. UM also shot 85 percent from the charity stripe, making 17 of their 20 attempts.
Three key categories stood out for Montevallo in tonight's game: turnovers, points off turnovers and points in the paint. The Falcons scored 28 points off of 19 Warhawk turnovers, while only committing 11 turnovers of their own. UM also outperformed AUM down low, scoring 12 more points in the paint.
