MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The University of Montevallo men's basketball team dropped their first contest of the season to Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday afternoon, 89-75. The Falcons now sit at 3-1 on the year, with all games being Gulf South Conference contests. UM won the first of this two-game weekend series on Friday night, but AUM came out red hot on Saturday to hand the Falcons their first loss of the season.
Â
The Warhawks opened the game with a 3-pointer on their first possession, and never trailed from that point on. Montevallo struggled to slow down the AUM offense in the first half, as the Warhawks shot over 61 percent from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers to take an 18-point lead into the break.
Â
AUM led by as many 26 in the second half, but the Falcons managed to get the Warhawk lead down to 10 late in the game. The UM offense was never able to fully get going and match the efficiency of the Warhawks' shooting splits. Montevallo struggled from the floor, shooting 38 percent from the field and 22 percent from three. On the other side, AUM shot 58 percent from the floor and 50 percent from deep.
Â
The Falcons were able to take care of the ball and win the turnover battle, forcing 22 turnovers while only committing 10 of their own.
Â
Four Falcons were in double figures in today's game. Travarus Carroll led UM in two categories, as he scored 15 points and dished out seven assists.
James McNeil scored 13 and had a game-high six steals.
Braxton Bertolette scored all 13 of his points in the second half, while
