Falcons Win Nail-biter over West Florida

Box Score MONTEVALLO - The Falcons picked up a big win on Sunday, topping West Florida 1-0 at Varsity Field. With the win, UM remained in the thick of the Gulf South Conference race at 4-2-0. The Falcons climbed back into a tie for second place in the GSC standings with Lee University. Both teams have 12 points, just a point behind league-leading Auburn-Montgomery who sits atop the conference standings with 13 points. Meanwhile, the Falcons, who entered the weekend ranked fifth in the South Region, improved to 8-2-1. West Florida fell to 4-2-2 and 1-2-1 in the GSC.

"I think we were actively thinking about the game instead of passively like we did Friday.  We defended our home turf against a very dangerous and well coached West Florida team,  it makes me proud that these guys listen and respond to adversity the way they have," said head coach Bruce Dietterle.

Both teams were stout on defense as the Falcons had only four shots in the first half, while West Florida managed just one. Two of the UM shots were on target, but were stopped by UWF keeper Jihad Gomes. Meanwhile, the lone UWF shot was off target. The UM defense limited the Argos to just two shots-on-goal for the entire game, both snuffed out by Falcons keeper Salvador Plaza. For the game, the Falcons out-shot the Argos 7-6.

The game remained scoreless until the 79th minute (78:54) when Falcons defender Jonathan Guadarrama found daylight after a pass from teammate Sam Mitchell. Guadarrama beat Gomes for the game-winning goal.

The Falcons will be on the road on Friday, taking on Alabama-Huntsville. Then, UM returns home on Sunday afternoon to host West Alabama.
