MONTEVALLO - The Falcons overcame a slow start to beat West Alabama 3-1 at Trustmark Arena on Friday night. With the win, Montevallo (17-13 and 8-7 in the GSC) locked up a trip to the Gulf South Conference tournament, which will be held in Pensacola next weekend.
The Falcons dominated the match the majority of the night, outscoring UWA in kills 58-38 and knocking down 12 aces. UM hit .261 for the match, while holding the visiting Tigers to .172.
Macy Martin led the way for the Falcons with 13 kills and five blocks.
Elizabeth Wilzbach added 10 kills, while
Evelina Teran tallied nine kills and 18 digs. Freshman
Casey Hendrixson returned to action after missing the last few games, finishing the match with 18 digs and four aces.
Sav Roys led the team in assists with 26 to go with three aces. Meanwhile,
Colton Thompson added 21 assists and nine digs.
The evening didn't get off to a flying start for the Falcons as they were stunned in the opening set 26-24 by UWA (1-20, 1-12 in GSC). However, UM woke up in the second set, pounding the Tigers 25-10.
In the third set, the Falcons tried to run away but the scrappy Tigers kept fighting back. On several occasions, UM opened up leads and UWA battled back. Late in the set, the Falcons led 20-15 after a UWA attack error. But, the Tigers scored four points in a row to trim the UM lead to 20-19. After both teams exchanged points making the score 21-20, the Falcons scored four unanswered to take the set 25-20.
lIn the final set, the score remained close until with the score 17-13, UM, the Falcons opened up a 10-point lead with six unanswered points. UWA scored one more point on a service error by Hendrixson, but the Falcons closed out the match with a kill by
Allie Dishman and a setting error by UWA. The final, 25-14.
The Falcons will play their final home match on Saturday afternoon against Mississippi College. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. Senior
Evelina Teran will take the floor one last time. During the pregame, Falcons fans will celebrate the stellar career of their "Super Senior".
