Another Close Loss Leaves Falcons with Winless Trip to the Rocket City

HUNTSVILLE - It's early in the season, but the Montevallo men's basketball team has already suffered enough heartbreak to last an entire season. The latest chapter, one point loss to Columbus State on Sunday afternoon as the Falcons fell 69-68 on the final day of the UAH Bill Penney Classic.

Junior guard Braxton Bertolette had 17 points to lead the Falcons (1-4).  He made 7-of-11 shots, including three 3-pointers. Aaris-Monte Bonds added 14 points, six rebounds and two blocks and Vinnie Viana tallied 10 points.

The Falcons trailed 36-34 at halftime, then fell behind by double-digits down the stretch in the second half. With 4:33 left, Columbus led 65-55, but a 10-0 run by UM tied the score at 65-all with 55 seconds left. With 38 seconds left, CSU took a 2-point lead on a bucket by Christian Chambers. Then, with 14 seconds left, Xavier Malcom's 3-point attempt was off the mark and the Cougars grabbed the rebound. After a Falcons foul, a pair of CSU freethrows to put the game out of reach. James McNeil hit a 3-pointer on the buzzer, but it was too little too late.

The Falcons hope to right the ship on Wednesday when they host Miles College at Trustmark Arena. Tip time is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be the first of six consecutive home games for the Falcons.
