Falcons Overcome Double-Digit Deficit to Beat Delta State in Long Distance Frenzy

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo men's basketball team used a lethal long range attack to come from behind in a 69-62 win over Delta State on Tuesday afternoon at Trustmark Arena. With the win, the Falcons remained unbeaten in the Gulf South Conference at 3-0, while improving to 5-6 overall. Meanwhile, Delta State (4-6) suffered their first loss in conference play, falling to 3-1.

Four Falcons scored double-figures in the game, led by guard James "JC" McNeil who finished with 22 points. McNeil was 7-of-16 from the field, including 4-of-6 from downtown. He was also 4-for-4 from the line. Braxton Bertolette also had four 3-pointers and tallied 16 points, while Xavier Malcom and Travarius Carroll contributed 15 and 14 points respectively, each dropping three bombs from beyond the arc. Aaris-Monte Bonds didn't score in double figures, but he pulled down 10 rebounds.

Maalik Cartwright led Delta State with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while Airen Brooks added 13 points.

As a team, the Falcons were flying high from the field, nailing 50% (14-of-28) shots from 3-point range.

UM trailed 36-29 at halftime and appeared to be in deep trouble when the Statesmen opened the second half with back-to-back baskets to take a 40-29 lead with 17:40 left.

Later in the half, trailing 52-43, the Falcons launched an assault, piling up six 3-pointers in a row to ignite a 15-4 run to take the lead. McNeil capped the rally with a 3-pointer that gave the Falcons a 58-56 lead with 4:40 remaining. Malcom added another triple with 2:46 left to extend the UM lead to 61-56. Cartwright temporarily stopped the bleeding with a layup that trimmed the lead to 61-58, but the Statesmen would come no closer.

Next up: The Falcons hit the road for the first time since November 21st on Saturday for another GSC matchup against Valdosta State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
