MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo women's basketball team ended the two game series against Lee with a 82-75 win over the Flames. The Falcon's completed a record-breaking performance as a team from behind the three-point line knocking down 15 threes to establish a new UM record.
The round two match up against the Flames was a highly competitive back and forth game as two of the top teams in the GSC east faced off. Both teams brought intensity on the defensive side with Montevallo (22 pts off TO) outscoring Lee (21 pts off TO) in points off turnovers by only one point. However, Lee could not contain UM in transition getting outscored 14-2 by the Falcons in fast break points.
The back-and-forth atmosphere of the game was apparent from the moment the ball tipped off as both teams were trading baskrts in the initial minutes of the game. Montevallo took command of the lead towards the end of the period, with a score of 16-12 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The second quarter began in the same fashion as the first, leading to a one-point Lee lead with 5:04 left to go. Montevallo would then initiate a 16-3 run to end the period with a 38-26 lead over Lee. The Falcons were on fire from behind the arc in the second quarter, knocking down six out of eight threes for their best per quarter three-point percentage (75.00%).
Montevallo continued to push its lead early in the third going up by as much as 17 over the Flames. Lee would not back down to the Falcons as they managed to cut the UM lead down to only six points with 3:42 left in the period. Montevallo would hang on to its lead after back-to-back threes from Marissa Snodgrass and
Kiya Sain gave way for a 59-45 lead over Lee.
The Falcons stayed strong as they held on to a double-digit lead at the beginning of the fourth. Two free throws from Lee's Halle Hughes cut UM's lead to nine with 4:55 left in the game. The Flames battled to bring the Montevallo lead to only five points with 2:00 left to go. UM knocked down some key free throws at the end of the game to secure a 82-75 win over Lee.
Marissa Snodgrass led the Falcons with a career high 29 points with four assists, three steals, and one rebound. Snodgrass's completed one of the top shooting performances in UM history with a 0.889 FG percentage (8/9 FG) along with a 0.875 three-point shooting percentage (7/8), making her second all time in three-point field goal percentage.
Savannah Lee added 13 points, seven rebounds, and a block to the Falcon effort. Senior
Kiya Sain recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game high 11 rebounds along with three assists and two steals.
