BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team traveled to Birmingham-Southern College and lit up the scoreboard early to claim a 15-5 win on Saturday afternoon. UM is now 2-1 on the season after opening the year with three-straight non-conference road games.
Brianna Shepler got the Falcons on the board, scoring two goals in the first minute of the opening half. BSC came back with goal, but another Falcon then struck with another set of back-to-back goals.
Jodi Morawiec netted two goals two and a half minutes apart to put UM ahead 4-1 with 15:27 left in the first half.
Crystal Williams put in another goal just 24 seconds later to push the lead to four. Each team had opportunities but seemed to be stonewalled. UM broke the scoring drought with 1:45 left in the half when
Hannah Fortin found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 6-1 lead heading into halftime.
Montevallo picked up right where they left off after the halftime break.
Rylee Horton netted two goals just 21 seconds apart to open the second half and give the Falcons a 8-1 lead with 29:00 left in the game. Williams scored her second goal of the afternoon just 20 seconds later to increase the UM lead again.
Sadie Bopst and
Anja Kuys then added one goal each to make it an 11-1 game with 26:59 left.
BSC responded by striking back and cutting the lead to single digits at the 22:35 mark.
Janey Johnson then got on the board three times over an 11-minute span to record a second half hat trick for the Falcons.
Hailey Wilcox scored the final UM goal of the afternoon with 5:40 left. BSC scored twice more before the end of regulation to put the score at 15-5.
UP NEXT: UM will look to get their second win in a row and play their first home game of the season against Oglethorpe University next Saturday, Feb. 27, at 11:30 a.m.
