MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team won their first home game of the season on Saturday afternoon against Oglethorpe University 17-6 in a non-conference matchup. The Falcons are now 3-1 on the season and have won two-straight games.
Anja Kuys got the Falcons going, scoring just 34 seconds into the game to give UM an early lead. Exactly a minute later,
Janey Johnson found the back of the net off of an assist from Kuys to double the Montevallo lead.
Sadie Bopst then put in back-to-back goals at the 24:04 and 21:01 marks to give UM a 4-0 lead.
Eleanor Bruce put in a goal with 18:44 left in the first half to continue Montevallo's hot start and extend the lead to five.
OU got one back at the midway point in the first half, but UM responded by scoring two unanswered goals to push the lead to six.
Oglethorpe scored another, but the Falcons scored four unanswered goals to end the half and held an 11-2 lead heading into the half.
Montevallo came out of the locker room after halftime and picked up right where they left off. UM scored the first five goals of the second half, and held a 16-2 lead with 15:50 left in the game.
OU scored four of the game's last five goals, but UM was able to halt the rally and secure a 17-6 win.
Horton led UM in scoring with a hat trick. Johnson scored two goals and assisted on three, Kuys chipped in two goals and two assists and Bopst had two goals and one assist.
Eleanor Bruce also added two goals, while
Jodi Morawiec,
Brianna Shepler,
Caleigh Spoon,
Kate Gammie-Baglini,
Hannah Fortin and
Hailey Wilcox each netted one goal.
The Falcon's experienced a major career milestone at the hands of
Janey Johnson who added three assists to her career total, making her the GSC's all-time leader in assists.
The Falcons' defense held strong all afternoon, opening up the transition game and creating many opportunities for the offense.
