Falcons drop hard fought battle against UWF 77-84 in Trustmark Arena

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - In a battle for the final playoff spot in the GSC Eastern Division, the West Florida Argonauts held off the Montevallo Falcons 84-77 as Wendell Matthews scored 35 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Argonauts.   The Falcons are now 6-8 with two games remaining at Shorter this weekend.   
 
West Florida opened the game and controlled the first half taking a 19-point lead with 5:13 remaining, their largest lead of the game.   The Falcons were able to make a scoring run and cut the lead to nine points trailing 40-31 at the half. 

Redshirt Junior Braxton Bertolette led the Falcons shooting 3-5 from three and scoring 11 first half points.  

Turnovers hurt the Falcons in the first half as they committed nine turnovers for 12 West Florida points.
 
Montevallo got hot in the second half as Bertolette continued shooting on a torrid pace.   The Falcons staged their comeback and cut the lead to 68-66 when Senior Xavier Malcom knocked down a three with 4:22 left in the game.  During the run, Bertolette scored 11 points and Redshirt Freshman Mason Shifflett pumped in 12 points. 

Montevallo had a chance to take the lead with 3:19 on the clock.   The Falcons swung the ball to a wide open Bertolette who fired up a three that went in and out.   The Argonauts then pushed their lead to 73-66 on a Matthews' layup.  The two teams battled hard the rest of the way but West Florida was able to hang on for a seven-point win.
 
Bertolette and Shifflett led the Falcons with 22 points.   Malcom scored 11 points and Junior guard Bob Carroll added 10 points in defeat.  For West Florida, Tarik Mckelphin and Daniel Sofield assisted Matthews by scoring 12 and 18 points respectively.  
 
SENIOR NIGHT:   Before the game, Montevallo honored seniors Ivan Smith and Bay Ethridge.
 
UP NEXT:   Montevallo travels to Rome, Georgia to take on Shorter in a crucial GSC series.   First game of the two-game series is Friday night, 5:00 pm CT and Saturday at 1:00 pm CT.   

Earlier this month, the Falcons were defeated by Shorter at home, 82-81, on February 2 as James McNeil led the Falcons with 20 points.   

The GSC tourney begins in one week with the #1 and #2 teams in each division hosting the #3 and #4 teams from the opposite division.
