MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo Falcons flew past the Union Bulldogs 13-3 for a GSC weekend series win on Sunday.
The Falcons (5-7, 3-3) were led by
Mychael McMillan (Centerville, Alabama) in the circle, with her first complete game shutout of the season and another offensive explosion, due in part to
Lauren Higginbotham's (Warrior, Alabama) five-RBI performance.
McMillan (2-1) allowed just three hits and one walk on the day. The junior peppered the strike zone for five innings, induced soft contact and trusted her defense. Eight of the Bulldogs fifteen outs were pop-ups in the infield.
"It was really great to have
Mychael McMillan come out and throw a complete game today," said head coach
Lindsay Vanover.
Higginbotham continued her RBI tear with her five-RBI game today. The freshman now has an incredible 14 RBI in 21 at-bats this season. Higginbotham was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, a walk and two runs scored to go along with her five RBI.
Kinley Adams (New Market, Alabama) recorded yet another multi-hit game with a 3-for-3 performance today. The freshman has now had five multi-hit games in ten starts and is hitting .552 on the year.
The Falcons took a 3-0 lead to the top of the fifth after a three-run triple by Higginbotham in the third inning. Montevallo scored 10 runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Sierra Easterwood (Cullman, Alabama) got the 10-run inning going when she knocked in Higginbotham, who had walked to start the inning.
Sawyer Martin (Pelham, AL) then singled home Easterwood.
Georgia Hughes (Montevallo, Alabama) pinch-hit single plated Martin and
Hannah Carey (Huntsville, Alabama), who had also walked earlier in the inning.
Adams then knocked home
Mariel Bertossi (Ronchi dei Legionari, Italy), who re-entered after a Mullinax walk. Later, Higginbotham sent home Adams and
Alexis Cortez (Bonaire, Georgia) on her double.
Fallon Groves (Ocean Springs, Mississippi) then delivered a towering three-run homerun to left field to give the Falcons a 13-0 lead, sending home Higginbotham and pinch-hitter
Brooke Ingram (Fort Payne, Alabama), who had walked.
"I'm so proud that all three sides of our game came out to play today," added Vanover. "It is easier to win games when that happens. This team loves to compete for each other. It takes all of us to win and they did that this weekend."
Easterwood and Martin were both 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI and run scored.
