MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team came up short to the West Georgia Wolves in an overtime thriller at Trustmark Arena on Tuesday.
The Falcons took charge in the opening minutes of the first half after kicking off an early seven point run over UWG making a 7-0 lead in the first 2:41. West Georgia quickly responded with nine straight points tying the game right after the first media timeout. West Georgia would continue the momentum through the duration of the half. UM took a one point lead into the locker room at half notching a 30-29 score.
The second half would begin in similar fashion as the first. Montevallo put in a couple of scores early in the second extending the lead to six points (35-29). The Wolves regained control of the lead midway through the second quarter, after a J.J. Barnes field goal made the score 43-47 in UWG's favor. The Falcons would not let them get comfortable as an
Ivan Smith layup increased the UM lead by six points with 4:30 left to go.
Two free throws for UWG made the game more interesting down the final stretch setting the Wolves up for a one possession deficit (58-56). West Georgia gained a one point lead with twelve seconds left to go after a made free throw.
Ivan Smith took matters into his own hands in the final seconds drawing a shooting foul to send him to the free throw line. Smith knocked down one out of two free throws leading the game to finish in overtime.
In overtime UWG managed to take a four point lead in the initial minutes of the extra period. The Falcon's would struggle to recover from an eight point UWG surge leading the Wolves to win 71-74 over Montevallo.
