Montevallo battles, ties with VSU on the road

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women's soccer team tied with Valdosta State University 0-0 in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons are now 4-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in conference play.

Although the game ended in a draw, UM's defense stood out. The Falcons held the Blazers to just four shots through regulation and the two overtime periods.

Montevallo's Samara Lino put a shot on goal in the first minute of the game, but was not able to find the back of the net. The Falcons kept the pressure on for the rest of the first half, shooting 11 times while not allowing a single shot from VSU.

The second half was extremely back-and-forth, as each team had four shots a piece. Montevallo earned six corner kicks in the second half, but could not make anything of the opportunities. UM earned three of these corners in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but did not get a shot off.

Montevallo made a push late in the second half, earning two corners in the last four minutes of regulation, but could not find a way to get a shot on target.

The first overtime period was all about defense, as each team earned a corner kick, but neither could get a shot off.

The Falcons came out firing in the second period of overtime. Kaitlyn Harvey put a shot on goal just two and a half minutes into the second overtime period, but could not get it past VSU's keeper, Landon Carter.

UM then nearly won the game shortly after when Allye Darnell put shot on goal but was unlucky and struck the post. Just a minute later, Kaeri Ward put one on target and also hit the post.

Montevallo outshot VSU 24-10, including a 9-0 advantage on shots in overtime.

UM's defense stood out, allowing just four shots, while Angel Hailey saved all three of the shots she faced.
