Falcons drop final game of weekend series to VSU 9-4

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team lost the final game of a three-game Gulf South Conference weekend series to Valdosta State University 9-4 on Saturday evening. The Falcons are now 5-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play on the season after being swept by the Blazers this weekend at home.

VSU got started quickly once again, scoring three runs in the first and one in the second to hold a 4-0 lead through an inning and a half of play.

Montevallo was shutout through the first four innings but showed life in the home half of the fifth. Brandon Moore (Buhl, Alabama) got things going with a leadoff double, and was later brought home on an Asa Awbrey (Carrollton, Georgia) RBI single to right field.

After a quick top of the sixth, the Falcons got the bats going once again.Mitch Fleming (Milton, Georgia) led the home half of the sixth off with a single to right center. After Ty Wooton (Collierville, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch, UM had runners on first and second with one out. Greg Lewandoski (Port Orange, Florida) then knocked a double into right center field that allowed Fleming to score. In the next at bat, Moore hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Wooton home. With two outs, Riley Cain (Steele, Missouri) stepped up to the plate and hit an infield single that allowed Lewandowski to score and tie the game 4-4.

Neither team was able to get any run production in the seventh, but much like the first game of the doubleheader, the Blazers took control in the eighth. VSU scored three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to seal the win.

The Falcons got one runner on base in the eighth and two runners on base in the ninth, but could not find a way bring the runners home.

Freshman Connor Phelan (Naples, Florida) was outstanding for Falcons out of the bullpen. The sidewinder struck out six in his five innings of relief and allowed just two hits and, again, walked none. Phelan now holds a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings of work with nine strikeouts, six hits allowed and no walks.

Lewandowski led UM at the plate in today's game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run. Awbrey hit 1-for-2 with an RBI and earned two walks. Fleming went 1-for-3 and scored a run, while Moore also went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

UP NEXT: Montevallo will host Albany State University in a non-conference doubleheader starting on Wednesday, March 10, at 2 p.m.
