TUPELO, Miss. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team won their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon over Delta State University in a non-conference, neutral site matchup 3-2. A penalty kick goal from
Ruben Carvalho proved to be the difference at the 103:25 mark in overtime. The Faclons are now 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
Montevallo was dominant in the first half, outshooting the Statesmen 10-1. UM got on the board twice in the first 10 minutes of the game to get out in front early.
Emil Martin found the back of the net 4:11 into the game off of an assist from
Fabio Menzel. Just over five minutes later, Carvalho scored his first of two penalty kick goals to double the Falcons' lead.
Montevallo kept the pressure on for the rest of half, but was not able to add to the lead, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
DSU came out in the second half with urgency, putting a shot on goal right away. The Statesmen cut the UM lead in half on a goal at the 54:02 mark.
Despite several close opportunities, the Falcons were not able to extend their lead. Delta State struck again at 74:29 to tie the game at 2-2.
Both teams had their chances, but neither was able to convert to break the deadlock in regulation.
DSU earned two corner kicks in overtime, but were not able to make anything of the opportunities.
Carvalho's PK goal at the 103:25 was the game winner and gave him a brace.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will play in their final regular season game of the year when they travel to Lee University to face the Flames on Friday, March 12, at 6 p.m. in a GSC matchup.
