MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at Auburn University at Montgomery, 8-4 and 3-23. The Falcons used some clutch runs late in game to secure the victory, but the Warhawks caught fire at the plate in game two to even the Gulf South Conference series. Montevallo is now 12-20 overall and 9-20 in GSC play.
UM's rally late in the game gave them a game one victory. The Falcons used five runs over the final two innings to claim an 8-4 win in game one of Sunday's GSC doubleheader.
In the top of the eighth, with the bases loaded and two outs,
Alex Langford hit a shot down the left field line to bring
Ben Teel and
Khalid Collymore across home plate to put UM ahead 5-4.
Evan Place then hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed
Asa Awbrey to tag up and score from third. Awbrey would then drive in two runs in the top of the ninth by roping a double down the left field line to bring Teel and
Ty Wooton across home plate to extend the lead to 7-4.
It was a back-and-forth game all afternoon until Montevallo took control late. UM got the game's scoring going in the top of the second when Awbrey scored on a wild pitch.
AUM would respond by scoring one run in the fourth and another in the fifth to take their first lead of the game. Montevallo took the lead right back in the top of the sixth inning by scoring two runs. An Awbrey single to right field sent
Reed Latimer across home plate to tie the game at 2-2. Collymore then scored on an error to make it 3-2.
The Warhawks would one run in the sixth to tie the game, and another in the seventh to retake the lead before UM's five-run explosion over the last two frames.
Asa Awbrey led Montevallo at the plate in game one, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Collymore went 2-for-4 while Langford was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Chandler Ingram got the win on the hill for the Falcons, tossing the final three frames while allowing four hits, one unearned run and striking out three.
In game two, it was all Warhawks.
The Falcons struck in the top of the first on a Langford single that brought Teel across home plate to make it a 1-0 game.
AUM responded by scoring four runs in the first, four runs in the second, nine runs in the third and four more runs in the fourth to lead 21-1 after four innings.
UM scored two in the sixth thanks to an Awbrey RBI single and a Latimer RBI sacrifice fly. The Warhawks earned both of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning to push their lead back to 20 runs at 23-3.
Teel went 2-for-3 and scored two of the three UM runs in the second game of the doubleheader.
AUM outhit the Falcons 22 to five in the second game.
