MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader to the visiting Shorter University Hawks 13-2 and 12-0. After the Shorter sweep in this weekend's series, Montevallo ends the season with a record of 12-24 overall and a 9-24 mark in Gulf South Conference play in the 2021 campaign. The Falcons did not qualify for the GSC tournament.
In game one, Montevallo forced the Hawks into a one-two-three inning to start things off in the top of the first. UM then took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first to hold their first lead of the series.
Riley Cain led things off for the Falcons with a single in the home half of the first.
Asa Awbrey then reached base on an error to put runners on the corners.
Alex Langford stepped up to the plate next and roped a triple down the left field that sent Cain and Awbrey home. Langford would be left stranded on third to end the inning.
Shorter responded by tying the game in the top of the second after loading up the bases with no outs. The Hawks then took a 3-2 lead in the third after scoring on a passed ball and never looked back.
Shorter tacked on four more runs in the fourth and six more runs in the seventh to hold a 13-2 advantage.
Langford led UM at the plate in game one of the doubleheader, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Awbrey,
Brennan Ferguson,
Reed Latimer and
Ty Wooton each went 1-for-3. Montevallo left one runner on base in the first, second, third, fourth and seventh innings.
In game two, Shorter took an early lead and controlled the game for the duration of the contest.
After scoring the game's first run on an error, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single. Shorter then jacked a three-run homer to left field to clear the bases and give them a 5-0 lead before the Falcons had a chance at the plate.
A sacrifice fly from the Hawks in the top of the second brought in another run and made it 6-0.
UM put runners on first and second in the both the bottom of the second and third innings, but could not find a way to cut into the Shorter lead.
The Hawks added four more runs in the top of the fourth to take a double-digit lead. After stealing home to make it 7-0, Shorter tacked on another run by scoring on an error. A two-RBI double from the Hawks then gave them a 10-0 lead.
The Hawks would add two more runs in the top of the fifth to make it 12-0. A pair of RBI doubles brought in the Shorter runs in the fifth.
Montevallo left runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth after
Brandon Moore was thrown out at home plate.
Moore led UM at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3.
Ben Teel went 1-for-2, while Awbrey, Langford and
Ryan Curran each went 1-for-3 in game two.
