MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo men's lacrosse team concluded their season as champions after taking a 12-10 win over UAH in the Peach Belt Conference Finals. The Falcons end the season with a 10-4 record while sweeping Peach Belt Conference opponents 7-0 during the championship run.
"When I decided to take the job here at Montevallo, I saw the potential that this place had for lacrosse," remarked Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year
Jason Lange on the growth of the program. "We started with about 36 freshman and two transfers and now 12 of them are getting ready to graduate. I think its a testimate to our guys and especially our seniors, could not be more proud to be their coach."
The game was tight in the first quarter as both teams held each other to only two goals each. The Falcons offense began to open up in the second quarter as they advanced to a four goal lead, 7-3, by the halftime break.
UM experienced its biggest lead of the game in the third quarter, 9-4, with 4:46 to play before the Chargers found their groove and began to shift the momentum of the game. UAH outscored UM 6-3 over the remainder of the time, including three goals with under seven minutes to play, but could not overcome the Falcons lead.
Coach Lange went on to acknowledge the contributions of former UM assistant, and current UAH head coach Connor Doyle who was on the sidelines for the Falcons during the building stages of the program, "[Doyle] was here for three years and went through all of the ups and downs that went into building this program, a lot of credit goes to him."
The Falcons were led by
Connor Frederick on offense who scored four goals with a ground ball and was named to the PBC All-Tournament Team. All-conference attacker
Trevayne Hunter also added three goals and a ground ball.
Tournament MVP and PBC Defensive Player of the Year
Kyle Little was ferocious defending the net for the Falcons, making 20 saves in the win including four in the final 1:34, halting the Chargers comeback efforts.
"I think Coach Lange and Coach Horning prepared me mentally for the game. We knew we were up against a great lacrosse team, they told me that they would come in rallies and they did but we were prepared for it and executed the game plan," said Little.
In its fourth year the Falcons conclude an incredible 2021 season with an undefeated Peach Belt Conference record, in the leagues first year of sponsoring men's lacrosse. The Falcons had multiple members named to the All-Peach Belt Conference Team including
Trevayne Hunter,
Thomas Vaesen,
Connor Frederick,
Jackson Neufeld,
Gabe Sucevic, and
Kyle Little. The conference voted Little as the Defender of the Year and named
Thomas Vaesen the PBC Player of the Year. Coach Lange was also honored as the PBC Coach of the Year.
