Lightening Strike Changes Fortunes in Falcons First Loss of the Season

Box Score MONTEVALLO - On a day when the weather was nothing less than horrible, a lightening delay proved to be a game-changer as Mississippi College handed Montevallo its first loss of the season, 3-1 on Sunday. the Falcons fell to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference, while Mississippi College improved to 2-3 and 1-1.

The game was scoreless for over 40 minutes into the game. Then, a lightening strike within the five mile range of Varsity Field caused a 30-minute delay. When play resumed, lightening struck again, except this time it would be in the form of a goal by the Choctaws. Antoine Recizac and Abell Perez teamed up to find Julio Rangel for the first goal of the game at 41:01. Less than a minute later, Mississippi College added another goal. This time, it was Recizac who found the back of the net with an assist from Soane Folituu, giving MC a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.

Facing a two-goal deficit and playing without second leading scorer and reigning GSC Player of the Week Nemanja Acimovic, the Falcons had their work cut out for them in absolutely terrible conditions. However, in the 60th minute (59:42), Edin Hernandez cut the lead in half with his first goal of the season off of a penalty kick.

But, the Choctaws put the game out of reach with a goal in the final minute (89:08) by Noah Wagner.

Side Note: The torrential rains proved to be too much for the Falcons live stream. Excess dampness during the women's match caused the computer to shut down in the first half of the game. The stream could not be revived as the rain would not relent, rendering the live streaming unavailable for the rest of the day. The UM Athletics Communications department hopes there was no irreversible damage to the equipment and that live streaming will resume in the next home match.

Next up: The Falcons will try to rebound on Friday, when they visit Christian Brothers in another GSC match. Then on Sunday, UM travels to Jackson, Tenn. to take on Union University..
