MONTEVALLO - The Montevallo men's soccer team ended their Saturday match up against Florida Southern in a 2-2 draw at Varsity Field. With the tie the Falcons inherit a 1-0-1 record and FSC adds another tie making their record 0-0-2.
Montevallo scored the first goal of the contest in the 26th minute when
Fabio Menzel finessed a goal between the Moccasin defense.
Florida Southern responded within ten minutes when Christoph Gums found the net for a game tying goal.
The 1-1 score held all the way until the 70th minute when
Mario Gratzl played a ball for
Julio Rojo to sink in the Moccasin net.
Defense prevailed in overtime, as neither team was able to tally a shot over 20 additional minutes.
"I'm really happy with a lot of things out of the weekend," said head coach
Bruce Dietterle. "I think we did enough that we should've walked away with a victory, but on the opposite side of it we did just enough to let them back in the game. The heat did matter, and we also created some movements that caused us problems, but we also created a lot of opportunities. We haven't scored five goals in a weekend in five years, and I think this is the first time we've ever put two goals in against them [Florida Southern]. So there's a lot to be positive about but we have to do a lot of work if we want to be successful. I thought this was a good weekend to open up and give a taste of what the GSC competition will be like."
